Important Message to VESD Families

Dear VESD Families,

On Wednesday afternoon, Johnny Bean, a teacher at Challenger Elementary, was arrested by the SB County Sheriff’s Department. Our district was contacted by law enforcement in December with information about an alleged incident from several years ago, and we immediately placed Mr. Bean on administrative leave and have been working closely with the Sheriff’s Department to ensure a thorough investigation.

These allegations are deeply disturbing and we understand you might feel shocked, saddened, or upset. We feel the same way. The safety of our students is our most important priority and we remain committed to providing them with a safe and nurturing environment.

During this time, we will strive to provide as much information as possible. However, we may not be able to share specific details due to privacy concerns of the ongoing police investigation. If you have any additional information regarding this situation or other concerns related to this employee, please contact Detective Rayenhartz with the Sheriff’s Department at 909-387-3626 or the VESD district office at 760-245-1691.

Additionally, counselors will be made available for all students, staff, and families who may need any type of support with this situation. If you would like to speak with a counselor to gather information on how to speak with children about sensitive topics, please contact the VESD district office, as well.

We appreciate all of your concern, support, and cooperation as we work to address this issue. Our district will continue to do everything we can to ensure the safety and well-being of our students.

Sincerely,

Jan Gonzales
Superintendent
